Richard and Andrew Perez, siblings from Santa Barbara attending California Lutheran University on scholarships, host a weekly show called Boyth Night every Wednesday from 8 to 10 p.m. at the KCLU Broadcast Center, according to an April 21 announcement. The show is part of iCLU Radio, the university’s student-run online station accessible via icluradio.org and the RadioFX app.
The variety of live programming on iCLU Radio reflects the diversity of California Lutheran’s student body. Other student hosts include Dia Tardino with The DDDDia Show, Markie Seabaugh with A Ticket to Yapperville, and Lex Lambros presenting Alt Rock Hour. Students can receive academic credit for hosting shows through radio classes or participate by joining the iCLU Radio Club.
Giana Gutridge said that hosts must follow Federal Communications Commission rules but otherwise have creative freedom: “they pretty much have the freedom to do whatever type of shows they want.” Gutridge also said, “iCLU really serves as a channel for students to be creative, to express themselves and to have their voices heard across campus.”
Students interested in behind-the-scenes work can gain experience in audio editing, marketing campaigns for radio shows, and event support during CalLuPalooza concerts. Richard Perez joined as a freshman and now hosts Decade Mixup focusing on music from different eras. Andrew Perez started his own show PB & Jamz after taking a class with adjunct professor Kyle Tamkin.
California Lutheran University competes in NCAA Division III through its Kingsmen and Regals teams in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference according to the official website. The university promotes diversity, equity and inclusion as part of its mission according to its official website, features a main campus spanning 225 acres in Thousand Oaks along with satellite centers according to the official website, is recognized as a Hispanic-Serving Institution by the U.S. Department of Education according to its official website, affiliates with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America according to its official website, and enrolls over 3,100 undergraduate and graduate students according to its official website.
As more students join or listen each week—one friend lamented when Boyth Night went on holiday break—the station continues serving as an outlet for creativity across campus.
