The No. 27 Pepperdine men’s tennis team lost to No. 8 Baylor by a score of 4-1 in the UTR Sports Collegiate Championships final on March 15 in Indian Wells, California. The defeat leaves Pepperdine with a season record of 9-7, while Baylor improved to 12-6.

This match was significant as it offered Pepperdine an opportunity to secure a championship title against a higher-ranked opponent. The outcome highlights the competitive level of collegiate tennis and the challenges faced by teams aiming for national recognition.

Baylor took an early lead by winning the doubles point, with Alexandru Chirita and Zsombor Velcz defeating Aleksa Pisaric and Lasse Poertner, followed by Luc Koenig and Connor Van Schalkwyk overcoming Edward Winter and Hugh Winter. In singles play, several matches were closely contested or abandoned due to match circumstances. Edward Winter’s match against Devin Badenhorst was left unfinished after Winter forced a tiebreaker in the first set but ultimately trailed in the second set when play stopped. Lasse Poertner also pushed his opponent Zsombor Velcz to a tiebreaker before falling in straight sets, with Velcz’s win clinching the overall victory for Baylor.

Aleksa Pisaric managed to tie his match at one set apiece against Connor Van Schalkwyk but lost momentum in the third set. Gustavo Ribeiro de Almeida’s contest with Alexandru Chirita was also abandoned during its third set. Maxi Homberg provided Pepperdine’s only point of the day with a straight-set win over Luc Koenig, while Photos Photiades fell to Louis Bowden after stepping into the lineup following doubles play.

Pepperdine will have two weeks before their next scheduled match at Pacific on March 27, which marks the start of seven consecutive West Coast Conference contests.

Pepperdine men’s tennis has a history marked by success, including an NCAA Championship in 2006 and multiple national titles dating back to its first NAIA Championship in 1952. The program boasts numerous All-Americans and has participated in dozens of NCAA Tournaments throughout its history.

Looking ahead, Pepperdine aims to regroup during this break and prepare for conference play as they seek further achievements this season.
