The Pepperdine University men’s tennis team, currently ranked No. 24, has received several West Coast Conference (WCC) weekly awards, according to an announcement from the conference.
Freshman Gustavo Ribeiro de Almeida was named Freshman of the Week. The doubles team of Lasse Poertner and Aleksa Pisaric received Doubles Team of the Week honors.
Poertner and Pisaric defeated Stanford’s Jagger Leach and Alex Chang with a score of 6-3, contributing to Pepperdine’s win in the doubles point and a 4-0 overall victory against No. 4 Stanford last Friday. The pair also won against UCLA’s Aadarsh Tripathi and Spencer Johnson on Saturday, again with a score of 6-3.
Almeida partnered with Maxi Homberg to secure a 6-2 win over Stanford’s Alexander Razeghi and Mark Krupkin in doubles play. He also recorded a singles victory against UCLA’s Tripathi in straight sets (7-5, 6-4) on Saturday.
The WCC Weekly Awards for February 10 included Max Wuelfing from Loyola Marymount University as Singles Player of the Week; Poertner and Pisaric as Doubles Team of the Week; and Almeida as Freshman of the Week.
Pepperdine will next compete on Friday at 1:30 p.m. PT when they travel to face No. 21 USC.
According to information provided by Pepperdine University, its men’s tennis program has a history that includes an NCAA Championship in 2006, following its first NAIA Championship in 1952. The program has produced national champions in both singles and doubles events, won the WCC title 44 times, reached the NCAA Tournament on forty occasions, advanced to six NCAA Regionals, and produced fifty-three All-Americans.
