Pepperdine University’s men’s tennis team completed its participation at the Hagedorn Hidden Duals, held at the University of San Diego. The Waves finished with a 3-3 record in doubles play over the weekend. Aleksa Pisaric and David Fix secured two wins as a pair, including a Sunday victory. Fix and Gustavo Ribeiro de Almeida also won their doubles match on Friday, while Pisaric teamed with Lasse Poertner for another win that day.
In singles matches, Pepperdine players collectively achieved an 8-3 record. Lasse Poertner led with three wins and no losses, while Fix won both of his singles contests. Pisaric ended the event with two victories and one loss, and Ribeiro de Almeida contributed one singles win. On Saturday, the team won all four singles matches against LSU opponents and followed up by taking three out of four matches against San Diego on Sunday.
Doubles results included Poertner/Pisaric defeating Arcila/Bastiaansen (Arizona) 6-3, and Fix/Ribeiro de Almeida beating Sekachov/Stelse (Arizona) 6-3 on October 31. On November 1, Pepperdine pairs lost to LSU teams in both doubles matches. November 2 saw Berrut/Ruland (San Diego) defeat Poertner/Ribeiro de Almeida 7-6 before Pisaric/Fix claimed a win over Klaassen/Wieland (San Diego) 7-5.
In singles competition on October 31, Ribeiro de Almeida lost to Sekachov (Arizona), Pisaric was defeated by Kask (Arizona), but Poertner prevailed over Bastiaansen (Arizona). The following day saw Poertner beat Ponce de Leon (LSU), Ribeiro de Almeida shut out Kohlman (LSU), Pisaric edge Loncarevic (LSU), and Fix overcome Vasquez Gehrke (LSU). On November 2, Poertner won after Ruland retired due to injury; Klaassen defeated Ribeiro de Almeida; Pisaric came back to beat Wieland; and Fix overcame Berrut.
The Waves are scheduled to compete next week at both the ITA Sectionals and ITA Conference Masters from November 6–9, which offer chances to qualify for the NCAA Championships.
According to program information provided by Pepperdine men’s tennis, “Pepperdine men’s tennis has a longstanding tradition of success, highlighted by an NCAA Championship in 2006 which came 54 years after its first NAIA Championship in 1952. Robbie Weiss recorded the program’s first NCAA singles championship in 1988 after the program saw doubles national championships in 1984 and 1985. Forty-four-time WCC Champions, Pepperdine has reached forty NCAA Tournaments and six NCAA Regionals in its history with fifty-three total All-Americans.”
