City of Thousand Oaks issued the following announcement on August 31.

City of Thousand Oaks Marks National Preparedness Month

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif., August 31, 2021 - September is National Preparedness Month which was established to encourage individuals, families, and businesses to take important preparedness steps at home, school, and work. This year’s national theme is “Prepare to Protect.”

“Everyone must play a role in ensuring their and their family’s safety. It’s the responsible thing to do. The best time to prepare for the next disaster - whether it’s a wildfire, wind event, or earthquake- is now,” said Thousand Oaks Mayor Claudia Bill-de la Peña.

Having an emergency plan in place, assembling an emergency kit, and knowing what to do and where to go is very important. The wildfires and wind events of the past are a reminder of what can happen. Be ready at home, work, or school to act after an emergency incident and before first responders arrive. Take some time today to prepare in advance to help yourself, your loved ones, co-workers, and your community by getting involved and completing a few basic steps. Safety steps you can take include:

  1. Learn lifesaving skills - such as CPR and first aid; visit the local American Red Cross to learn about classes.
  2. Attend a free online Community Emergency Response Training (CERT) program offered by the City of Thousand Oaks and Ventura County Fire Department.
  3. Conduct an Evacuation Checklist so that if you need to evacuate your neighborhood, you are ready, and you know where to go.
  4. Assemble all your important documents in one place or save them on a flash drive for safekeeping.
  5. Make sure you and all family members have a plan, and have up-to-date contact information at www.VCalert.com.
