Thousand Oaks: December In-Person & Virtual Programs for Children, Teens, and Adults at the Thousand Oaks Library

Thousand Oaks issued the following announcement on December 3.

Students in Kindergarten through 8th Grade can get free homework help from volunteers at the Grant R. Brimhall Library and Newbury Park Library. Mondays from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Tuesdays from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Newbury Park Library. Wednesdays and Thursdays from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Grant R. Brimhall Library. All programs are subject to change or cancellation without prior notice. No registration required. Closed on all CVUSD holidays and breaks.

Craft Kits to Go

Stop by the library to pick up a craft kit to go. Kits are available at the Grant R. Brimhall Library's Children's Help Desk and the Newbury Park Library's Information Desk during open hours. Crafts are replaced monthly. One kit per person. For ages 5+. While supplies last.

Dog Days

Young readers can sign up for a brief 10-minute session with a certified therapy dog and their owner on Tuesday, December 7 and 14, 2021 at Grant R. Brimhall Library. Registration required.

 Sensory Bags

Sign up for a 15-minute session and create your own sensory bag. Sensory bags allow children to explore different textures while practicing fine motor skills. The program will be hosted in the Grant R. Brimhall Library courtyard on Tuesday, December 7, 2021 from 10:15 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. for children ages 0-12 months old and Wednesday, December 8, 2021 from 10:15 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. for children ages 12-36 months. 

Super Puff Party

Get creative and practice fine motor skills with Super Puffs. Sign up for a 15-minute session.

For ages 3-5 years. The program will be hosted in-person on Thursday, December 9, 2021 from 10:15 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. in the Grant R. Brimhall Library courtyard. Registration required.

Craft Program: Button Keychains

Design and create your own button or button keychain. A perfect gift for yourself or for the holidays. For grades K-12th. Create up to 3 designs. The program will be hosted in-person on Monday, December 13, 2021 from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Grant R. Brimhall Library, Tuesday, December 14, 2021 from 2:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Newbury Park Library, and Wednesday, December 15, 2021 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Grant R. Brimhall Library. No registration required.

Girls Read Book Club 

Students in Grades 4-5 are encouraged to join us monthly to discuss books with strong female

characters. The book club will meet on Tuesday, December 14, 2021 from 6:00 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. in the Grant R. Brimhall Library Children's Library program room. Registration required.

Winter Reading Challenge

Thousand Oaks Library is participating in Beanstack's Annual Winter Reading Challenge. We challenge our patrons to read for at least four hours! Log four hours of reading through Beanstack and earn a virtual ticket into an Opportunity Drawing for a $25 Visa Gift Card.

Teens & Tweens

Teen Space

Check our virtual teen space for writing prompts, book teasers and recommendations from the Thousand Oaks Teen Advisory League. 

Cookie Cutters and Ornaments

Watch a demonstration on how to use TinkerCAD (Computer Aided Design) to design your very own holiday cookie cutters or ornaments that can be 3D printed at the library. This is the perfect opportunity to learn about the library’s 3D printing services and ask your questions about 3D printing. The program will be hosted in-person in the Teen Space at Grant R. Brimhall Library on Sunday, December 5, 2021 from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. Registration required.

Adults

Conversations with Mom

This free, ongoing group is an opportunity for moms and their newborns to get together in a relaxed environment to express the joys and concerns of being a new mother. This support group covers a variety of topics, offering the opportunity to meet new moms in the community, and provides a place to ask questions and get information. The group is facilitated by Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Kimberly Zevallos (Lic. #80021) of Counseling Conejo Valley. Call 805-410-4541 for more information. Tuesday, December 7 and 14, 2021 from 10:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. in the Grant R. Brimhall Library Courtyard. Registration is required for each date. Space is limited. No walk-ins. Virtual Open Mic Poetry

Join us for a joint program between the Thousand Oaks Library and The Ventura County Poetry Project as we present Open Mic Poetry Nights. Come listen to local poets and share your own work every second and fourth Wednesday of the month. Every fourth Wednesday will include a reading from a guest reader. Open Mic will be hosted via Zoom on Wednesday, December 8, 2021 and December 22, 2021 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Local Author Talk: Debra Thomas

Award winning local Author Debra Thomas will be talking about her book Luz. Luz is the winner of the 2020 Sarton Award for Contemporary Fiction and the 2020 Next Generation Indie Book Award for Multicultural Fiction. The program will be hosted in-person at Grant R. Brimhall Library on Saturday, December 11, 2021 from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. Registration required.
