City of Ventura to host Housing Forum for Westside residents on November 16, 2022

Ventura, Calif. — The City of Ventura’s Housing Services Division will host a housing forum on Wednesday, November 16, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Bell Arts Factory, located at 432 North Ventura Avenue in Ventura. Childcare and interpretation services will be provided for participants.

Topics discussed during the meeting include fair housing, landlord and tenant rights, paths to homeownership, and a panel discussion on new affordable housing developments.

“This is a great opportunity for renters to learn about their rights as tenants under the State’s Tenant Protection Act, the process behind just cause evictions, and provide input on tenant protections and relocation assistance,” shared Community Development Director Peter Gilli. “The forum will also be attended by advocates from organizations that help mediate landlord-tenant issues to answer questions and offer advice for residents.”

Presenters include the Housing Rights Center, People’s Self-Help Housing Corporation, Ventura County Community Development Corporation (VCCDC), Housing Authority of the City of Ventura, Central Coast Alliance United for a Sustainable Economy (CAUSE), and Westside Community Development Corporation.

The Housing Authority and People’s Self-Help housing will participate in a panel discussion of new affordable housing developments. The VCCDC will discuss paths to homeownership and down-payment assistance programs for first-time homebuyers. The City’s Housing Services Division will also provide information about programs and objectives identified in the City’s Housing Element, which is a plan that will be submitted to the California Department of Housing and Community Development.

“Housing costs rising faster than incomes, the supply of houses not keeping up with demand, scarcity of land, and demographic changes such as population growth, aging, and shifts in household composition are some of the many factors that contribute to the lack of affordability,” said City Housing Services Manager Leona Rollins. “This forum provides an opportunity for the public to learn more about housing services and connect with community partners in this space.”
