Lori E. Varlotta, PhD. President | California Lutheran University
California Lutheran University President, Lori E. Varlotta, has echoed the sentiment of the Rev. Elizabeth Eaton, presiding bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, emphasizing the importance of guiding students to discover their calling and purpose in life. Varlotta endorsed the view that institutions like universities play a crucial role in this endeavor, stating, "Such stories illustrate what institutions like ours aim to do."
Varlotta also aligned with David Cunningham's assertion that "Colleges Have Callings, Too," suggesting that institutions should articulate and embody their specific calling. She proposed a two-fold approach for Cal Lutheran to follow in order to assist students in understanding and exploring their vocation.
Rooted in Lutheran educational values, Varlotta emphasized the need for a holistic approach, stating, "I propose that the following serve as a launch pad for articulating and embodying Cal Lutheran’s vocation." She highlighted the importance of aligning the university's traditions, strengths, and priorities with the needs of the world, fostering critical thinking and social responsibility among students.
Varlotta urged the Cal Lutheran community to engage in creating a cohesive and inclusive environment where individuals can come together to contribute towards a common purpose. She emphasized the significance of joining "our heads, hearts and hands in a messy middle where life unfolds."
In her call to action, Varlotta encouraged members of the Cal Lutheran community to actively participate in shaping the university's vocation. She envisioned a future where the university's commitment to guiding students in finding their purpose is reflected in all aspects of campus life, from academic discussions to community service initiatives.
If you feel compelled to contribute to this mission, Varlotta invited individuals to reach out to the office of the president at officeofthepresident@CalLutheran.edu. In closing, she expressed her optimism for the future, stating, "Happy reading, thinking and doing!"
