California Lutheran University (Cal Lutheran) is set to launch a data science bachelor's degree program in Fall 2024, addressing the growing demand for data-driven careers. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, data science is expected to grow by 35% by 2032, much faster than average.
“The addition of our new data science program allows us to address student demand and meet workforce needs,” said Lori E. Varlotta, president of Cal Lutheran. “Our faculty have designed the curriculum to ensure that students will not only develop their technical skills but the ethical orientation of being good data stewards — professionals who will understand and seek to protect the sensitive data we all seek to safeguard.”
The program integrates mathematics, statistics, and computer science through both theoretical and hands-on training. Students can customize their education with elective courses and an optional minor. There are no prerequisites for this major, allowing students to start classes in their first year.
Professors Dr. Christopher Brown from the mathematics department and Dr. John Garcia from the School of Management developed the curriculum with input from related faculty and industry advisory groups.
In response to increased interest from students and industry demand for skilled employees, Cal Lutheran is also introducing additional degree programs starting Fall 2024:
- Sport Management Master of Science: This fully online program builds on an existing bachelor’s degree in sport management.
- Communications Majors: New majors include advertising/public relations, journalism, and sports communications.
- Museum Studies: Added as a major within the history degree program.
- Two-year Path to Credentialing for Transfer Students: Designed for those transferring with an Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT) in education or child development.
Additionally, Cal Lutheran plans to offer 11 fully online graduate and undergraduate professional programs as alternatives to corresponding in-person programs starting Spring 2024. The School of Professional and Continuing Studies will add accounting and financial analysis majors while the School of Management will introduce degrees including Master of Public Policy and Administration, Master of Science in Management, and Master of Science in Information Technology.
For its online offerings, Cal Lutheran has partnered with AllCampus to make higher education more affordable and accessible.
