California Lutheran University's Theatre and Dance Department is set to present "The Doctor in Spite of Himself," a classic play by French playwright Molière. The production will be staged from November 7 through November 17 at the Black Box Studio Theatre on the university's campus, with performances scheduled for Thursday through Saturday evenings and a Sunday matinee.

Director Kenneth Gardner, an MFA and drama professor at Cal Lutheran, highlighted Molière's legacy as a classical playwright known for his controversial themes. Gardner noted, "Molière is considered one of the great classical playwrights and one of the most controversial. He often poked fun at major institutions such as religion, society and, in the case of this play, the medical profession."

"The Doctor in Spite of Himself" is described as a slapstick farce that follows Sganarelle, a lazy woodcutter who becomes a "doctor" by chance. He deceives Géronte, a wealthy socialite while helping reunite Géronte's daughter with her forbidden lover.

The cast features Cal Lutheran students Michael Richardson as Sganarelle; Emilia Brewer as Martine; Troy Martinez as Monsieur Robert; and Stephen Johnston playing Géronte. Zoe Monge, also a student at Cal Lutheran, designed costumes inspired by Commedia dell'arte characters.

Performance times are set for 8 p.m. on November 7-9 and November 14-16, with a special matinee at 2 p.m. on November 17. Tickets are priced at $10 and can be purchased online. Admission is free for Cal Lutheran students, faculty, and staff with ID.

California Lutheran University has been federally recognized as a Hispanic-Serving Institution since 2016 and serves over 2,200 undergraduate students along with more than 1,000 graduate students from various countries.
