Jasmine Nicole Keys, a recent graduate from California Lutheran University, has transformed her lifelong passion for music into a teaching career at Hueneme High School in Oxnard, California. Raised in a musically inclined family, Keys developed an early appreciation for music and discovered her passion for the viola during her middle school years.
In August 2023, Keys began directing the marching and symphonic band programs at Hueneme High School, where she is noted as the first African-American female band director within the Oxnard Union High School District. She teaches at a Title I school where about 90% of students are Latino and come from low-income families.
Reflecting on her own musical journey, Keys admitted that initially she struggled to read music but eventually embraced it as an escape and source of comfort. “Music is such a gift if you allow it to be,” she shared.
Keys faced initial nervousness when stepping into her role at Hueneme High School due to the small age gap between herself and her students. However, she quickly felt welcomed by them. “They are helping me to learn patience,” she said while discussing how they work together as a team.
Her approach involves introducing students to various musical genres. This includes popular tunes for events like football games and pieces from soundtracks such as "How to Train Your Dragon" by John Powell. Additionally, she has exposed them to works by Astor Piazzolla.
“They really give it their all,” Keys remarked about her students' dedication. She emphasizes creating an environment where they can practice diligently.
Keys credits several mentors during her time at California Lutheran University with fostering her musical growth. Among them was Yoshika Masuda who inspired her choice of university through his encouragement during auditions.
Beyond teaching, Keys is active as a violist performing with ensembles like the Thousand Oaks Philharmonic and Santa Barbara Symphony. Her talents have also been featured in projects such as Netflix's soundtrack for "Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F."
Looking ahead, Keys aims to complete her master’s degree in education by May 2025 while continuing to teach at Hueneme High School. She believes strongly in exposing children to music for its educational benefits: “Seeing that spark as they get it and connect with it is huge.”
