Robin Wall Kimmerer, the author of "Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teachings of Plants," is set to speak at California Lutheran University. The event will take place on February 12 at 5:30 p.m. in Samuelson Chapel as part of the Harold Stoner Clark Lecture Series.
Kimmerer's book emphasizes themes such as resilience, generosity, and interdependence with nature. She writes about the importance of reciprocity with the natural world through gratitude, ceremony, land stewardship, science, art, and practical reverence. Her work has been widely recognized, with "Braiding Sweetgrass" selling over two million copies worldwide and being translated into 20 languages.
In addition to her writing, Kimmerer is a mother, scientist, professor, MacArthur Fellow, and an enrolled member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation. Her latest book is titled "The Serviceberry: Abundance and Reciprocity in the Natural World."
Kimmerer serves as a SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor of environmental biology and is the founder and director of the Center for Native Peoples and the Environment. The center aims to integrate Indigenous wisdom with scientific knowledge for sustainability goals.
The lecture at California Lutheran University is free to attend but requires registration. Seating will be on a first-come-first-served basis. For those unable to attend in person, a livestream will be available on CalLutheran.edu/live.
California Lutheran University was founded in 1959 and became a federally recognized Hispanic-Serving Institution in 2016. It hosts over 2,200 undergraduate students and 1,000 graduate students from various countries.
