Spring break offers students at Cal Lutheran University an opportunity to deepen their understanding of course material through faculty-led travel seminars. In April 2023, Calley Stein and her classmates traveled to Athens, Greece, with Professor Brian Collins to explore ancient Greek philosophy and history.

Stein noted the impact of learning about historical sites like Plato’s Academy before visiting them: “If I had just gone to Greece without prior knowledge of the history of Athens, I don’t think I would have gotten as much out of the trip.” She appreciated that the trip was both educational and enjoyable, allowing for personal exploration.

The experience marked Stein's first time studying abroad. She praised Collins for preparing her well for international travel: “He prepared me well for what I should bring and what to expect with what we would be doing every day.”

Assistant Professor Sophia Khadraoui-Fortune led another group in June 2024 on a monthlong course in Paris, France. Students learned French and explored landmarks while staying with host families. Khadraoui-Fortune aimed to provide a manageable alternative for those hesitant about longer study abroad commitments: “I provide an alternative that is more manageable for those who may feel apprehensive about a longer commitment.”

Matthew Yates, director of the Office of Education Abroad, emphasized quality education in these programs: “It’s not just taking students abroad for fun … but having a very rigorous, well-designed course with outcomes we assess.”

The university supports these programs despite challenges such as cost. While tuition covers instruction, students must pay for flights and accommodations. Financial aid options are available to help manage these expenses.

Cal Lutheran plans future seminars in Egypt, Spain, Japan, Mexico, Ireland, and Germany. These programs aim to recreate the classroom experience globally by combining academic rigor with cultural immersion.
